The Vertical Experience, CirkulationsCentralen, Malmö, 2011
There is no horizon in the exhibition The Vertical Experience. Madelene Oldeman has created large suggestive ink and watercolour drawings where some works only fit with difficulty in the gallery space. The surface of the drawings is so carefully crafted that it seems to want to float out of the paper and become an object in the room. One drawing takes the final step and turns into an object in its own right. The work gives a dreamy, floating impression where everything seems to strive to find a new form or other states. The gallery space becomes a box that captures some of the illusion. Oldeman often works with large drawings. The running ink which is difficult to manage contrasting with the fine pen forms a working method which has been applied for a couple of years now. Now colour has been introduced and the watercolour lies like a hand-tinted photograph in the drawings.
